Makita’s 10 in. Compound Miter Saw consolidates force, execution and convenience for most basic miter cuts. Ideal for a scope of uses including carpentry, cabinetry, deck building, confining and more. The progressively adjusted, 15-Amp, direct-drive engine is built to never slip or hinder like belt-drive units. Electronic rate control keeps up consistent pace under burden. Delicate begin innovation guarantee smooth begins.
For those clients who acknowledge Makita instruments, this is a decent broadly useful miter saw with great precision and a low weight (11kg) for most extreme conveyability. The 1,650W brush engine gives all that could possibly be needed energy to all applications, including cutting aluminum (with the right edge and sufficient clasping). The back wall, and also having openings bored for extra bolster plates, highlights a rotating area on the left hand side which can be moved in or out of position to give the best bolster when cutting either steep or shallow angles. The material clasp can be set in any of four positions for most extreme accommodation. Supplied with dust pack, TCT saw sharp edge, material clasp and administration instruments.

I own a hardwood flooring business and we have 4 of these saws in use and 3 Dewalt 10″ and 1 Hitachi. I had the Milwaukee Magnum 10″ but sold it because it was too heavy and hard to use. These Makita 10″ saws have a great feel to them and are prefered by our crews. We have never had a repair problem with them except for truing the fence which gets knocked out of square after extended use as is typical with all miter saws I’ve used. Overall the best 10″ saw out there
You’d think it would be easy to find a miter saw that cut straights, angles, and bevels accurately (without having to adjust them every time), but alas no. I went through a couple of cheaper brands hoping to save a few bucks… live and learn. This saw doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of some other brands, but it cuts true.
The tolerances of the Makita LS1040 are so tight that wafer thin pieces of wood can be shaved off and you can see through them. I am not lying. I shaved off pieces of 2x material and could see light through them. Also miter cuts in moldings are crisp and clean. I especially like tools with blade brakes because they are safer and blade changing is faster. Because of its light weight I have no problem transporting this saw from job to job. Sure a heavier slide saw will cut 2×10 and larger stock but honestly how often do I cut that on the job site with a miter saw… never.
Assessing The Makita LS1040
If you are looking for a basic miter saw that is solidly built with not many additional features and is very light and easy to carry around, the Makita LS1040 could be the right miter saw for you. It comes with an affordable price tag. But does the LS1040 have all the features you need? Below is a comprehensive review of this portable saw. We will take a peek at the features, usability, power, pros and where it falls short.
Despite the cheap price and light weight design, it comes with 10 inch blade that can make some deep and precise cuts on any kind of wood. It might not have the width capacity of a sliding saw, but is pretty good to work on large pieces of wood. You can also use this as your primary saw, if you don’t do cut crown molding very often. It also has the ability to do miter and bevel cuts, something one could find only in a compound saw.

Build and safety features
The Makita LS1040 weighs a mere 27.3 pounds and is ultra-portable. Most of the miter saws with almost same set of features weigh more than 35 pounds. This is huge advantage for contractors who have the need to move the tool to and from the site on a day-to-day basis.
You can lock the handle in lowered position by means of a stopper pin on the side and the tool is ready to go on a ride. Release the stopper pin and connect the machine to the power out let and is can go on for hours cutting all kinds of wood.
The tool comes with a safety lock-off button that will prevent any unintended starts. The saw is also equipped with an electric blade brake – just in case the blade fails to stop after the switch trigger is released.
The 15 Amp motor can deliver a no-load performance of 4600 RPM. There is no kind of bogging on the workpiece, thanks to the dynamically balanced DD (direct-drive) motor which is also quiet and runs smooth.
Unlike a compound miter, saw bevel cuts could be done only to one side (0 to 45 degrees) to the left using this machine. So you might have to position the wood accordingly. Where as in a compound miter saw, the blade could be used at an angle either to the left of the right for bevel cuts.
However, in case of miter cuts, you will be able to use the blade to the right and left. (L – up to 45 and R – up to 52). The Makita LS1040 also has 9 positive miter stops settings 45, 22.5, 15, 30 (degrees) left or right and 90 degree cuts (0 degrees).
Types of cuts
The saw is well suited for press cutting. Once the workpiece is secured in position by means of the vise, the blade is lowered to smoothly cut the workpiece. The same way, miter cutting could be also accomplished after the blade is adjusted to the desired miter angle.
Loosen the lever to tilt the blade to lock it into your desired bevel angle and tight the lever and the Makita LS1040 is ready for some accurate bevel cuts. Compound cutting, cutting crown and cove moldings could also be accomplished using this machine.
The machine could be bolted to a stable surface like a strong table by means of 2 bolt holes located at the base of the machine. One might think 2 bolts are less for fastening a power tool like this. However if you take in to account the light weight, the 2 blots are more than enough to anchor the Makita LS1040 firmly to the surface.
Last thoughts on the Makita LS1040
The Makita LS1040 with a powerful 15 Amp motor, sold build, dual pivoting arm, dust collector, 9 common settings, and light weight could best suite the cutting needs of light DIYers and contractors who are looking for a secondary saw which is highly portable.
